I grinned to myself as I felt my come prepare to fill Monica's mouth. This may not have been exactly what Dr. Morton expected, and it wasn't going to fit into a T&P annual review, but this was certainly a great way to provide services to my students.

Good story but that twist undercuts some of the suspense. He wasn't playing it straight from the start

Anonymousover 3 years agoI couldn't get past the white male portion of this story without flinching. You think it would be okay for a black man or someone of another race?
drscarover 3 years agoAuthorI had thought about putting the backstory in about how Mike got hired, but thought that it was too pedantic and too distracting from the core of the story, which was of course to get Dr. Mike to the party.
The inner workings and politics of academic faculty are, well, boring. When hiring a faculty member, the Director can only override the search committee if there is too close a vote or a tie. Otherwise, the Director is "involved," but not influential.
In this case, the Director was thrilled to get the prestige of hiring a young professor. A lot of attention, and a lot of good inside-the-university press and kudos. The Director can take that and use it to his advantage, while still working hard to get rid of the young academic.
See? Boring. Nevertheless, that's often what happens in highly political institutions of higher learning. Untenured professors are treated very much like serfs.
Should it have been included in the story? Meh. Does it stretch the suspension of disbelief? Probably. There would likely be no real way to write something interesting that would help in that regard.
It is, however, a true story. So I guess there's that.
Anonymousover 3 years agoThis story is ridiculous from the getgo. The Director would have been involved in the hiring of Mike, interviewing him, etc. So why would he approve the hiring of someone that he felt was too young?
And if the hiring of Mike was considered a coup for the department, and Mike had over a dozen articles published before even getting his doctorate, it would seem that he would have no trouble finding another job.
In short, the set-up is too artificial. 1*.
