off Orca Island
the whales echolate and spout
peace calls toward shore

where men sort through the
larger driftwood, picking out
furniture marble

past the sands, the tribes
are linked by bike paths flanked
by armored black-berries

in a vale, a young
black devotee of Basho and
Buddha glows purple
