Years later, as I handled the seventh and last baby of our little family, looking at my still gorgeous mother and now wife, I wondered if we had somehow shortchanged him. If his business failed due to the economy and his drinking was a congenital weakness, then perhaps all of the bad things he might have done may have been...well, two of the babies were crying for their formulae. I didn't dwell on the past. Everything worked out fairly, I reasoned. That was good enough.
