Months later, we were at one of the few still functioning drive-ins in the country. As I returned from the snack bar with the burgers freshly prepared that morning and the popcorn freshly popped sometime last year in Mexico, mom removed the new born baby from her gorgeous breast. Its lips came off with a noisy POP! She placed it in the car seat in the back, the beautiful little boy even now fast asleep.
In the front or our just paid off Audi Six sedan, surrounded by wood and leather, we kissed, in love, secure in that car, with that child, with our business interests. Mom thought briefly about the ugliness which broke up her marriage, the happiness that she and I found together. Then she mused about that job interview, and the wretched if just fate that her ex-husband found himself in. As the movie got scary, she snuggled against me, wanting my powerful construction muscular arms to hold her, to shield her.
I held her tightly, whispering my love into her ear, gently, and continually, throughout the film. That was all she wanted, all she valued. Her ex-husband could deliver pizzas or 'run his girlfriend', both jobs earning pocket change. Mom didn't care about him, didn't worry about the nightly weekend brawls at the trailer park which might eventually get him (they did). What her 'old man' had done to her was best forgotten; she had a new man in her life, and love, and that was all anyone could ask for.
