The whole thing of Nick and his mate and the mate‘s mother was a bit constructed as a back story but this story here is on a different level Really, really good. Keep going

You also write in a good amount of character development to make the stories and situations believable which can be a turn off on other stories that rush everything

Great story but it definitely shouldn't end here. For me, I favor it continuing with these two folks ending up together. Their personalities have developed to excluding other partners for both of them. Please continue their story. :-)
